A real talent that has to be learnt by all photographers — and Kathy really has this talent — is becoming a critic of your own work and distilling your 4000 images taken on a trip down to 50 or so really great ones makes the difference. A lot of great shots are seen as they are taken but others also sometimes emerge as you look through them. Taking a break after a safari and then revisiting the images again and again can help you identify the gems. Also get someone else whose artistic eye that you trust to help you go through the images.

Great shot!

I see you took care to rotate the camera around the lens’ nodal point? Esp the lines on the deck can be a nightmare to get right if the camera wasn’t rotated properly. What panorama head did you use? I have a NodalNinja3 (on a RD16 rotator and their excellent EZ-leveler-II), which fits my smallish DSLR with equally smallish fixed focal length lenses, but not the larger f/2.8 standard zoom at *all* focal lengths.

Concerning the sky, I would have bracketed (0Ev and -2Ev at least) the shots, but I don’t think exposure fusion (which is what I generally use) would have resulted in quite as dramatic a result. Did you bracket, or is the foreground derived from one series with one exposure only?

That’s a pleasure Kathy — yes. I think that I find it easier to make criticisms in writing. Looking forward to see the next batch. I think that it works for everyone to post up their images in a personal gallery and then we can keep the comments flowing.

Thanks so much, David. There were just so many wonderful moments on this trip, as there always are when we travel with you. And it’s not just the moments with the big game either, although of course they are thrilling! What better place to practice and learn than on one of your workshops? The opportunities to make great photos are endless and you are always full of encouragement and ideas for making a better image and seeing things a little differently than I would on my own. Your enthusiasm is contagious, your patience much appreciated.
