It’s a time when its still reasonably cool but the game viewing and landscapes are outstanding. The highlights of Luangwa at this time are
We also run trips during February (the Emerald Season) and November (the Predator season) which offer quite different experiences of this wonderful valley. The Emerald Season trip is also called the River Journey as we follow this magnificent river for 40 kilometres upstream into an area that is inaccessible at other times of year. Predator viewing is also excellent at this time and the birding is at its best. During November its hot and the predators have the upper hand. We follow the pattern of their movements waking up extra early. This is the time for carmine bee-eaters.

Join our popular Emerald Season Photographic Workshop in Zambia’s South Luangwa National Park, one of the great game parks of Southern African. Luangwa is particularly regarded for its wonderful riverine scenery, high leopard concentrations and excellent guiding.

This photographic expedition coincides with the summer green season. We can expect billowing clouds, migrant birds, flowers, butterflies, wonderful visibility and also great predators. Rain at this time of year comes in intense short thunderstorms and very seldom disrupts any game drives. In fact it creates opportunities as wet weather forces lion and leopard onto high ground and onto the same all-weather routes we will use.
Robin Pope Safaris has excellent guides, and I have been working for them for 10 years. Vehicles are open. The sixth window seat is for the scout that joins us if we want to go on walks. Also, see our popular Predator Safari held in September or October.
Guests should make own arrangements to and from Lusaka. There is a meet and greet service in Lusaka and we will arrange overnight accommodation at the Protea Towers Hotel. You will be collected from your hotel next morning for the flight to Mfuwe which departs at 0h730 and takes approximately one hour to reach Mfuwe. Here you we will be met by guides from Robin Pope Safaris who will transfer us to Luangwa River Camp.
The journey begins at Nkwali Camp, which is in the more southerly part of Luangwa near spectacular game driving and walking areas. Three nights in this fantastic camp gives us time to take wonderful pictures and explore the southern areas of the park. The game in Luangwa can match that anywhere in Africa. What really makes it extra special is this time of year and the guiding and people of the Luangwa Valley. It is a wonderful destination — and for me, a second home.
We then move north to the remote Nsefu sector travelling for more than 40 kilometres along the sweeping Luangwa River. On the way we will see fish eagles, hippos and sometimes lion on the banks. Nsefu is very remote and is only accessible by river at this time of year. We usually have the place to ourselves and will spend 2 nights here using our time to explore the wonderful stork colony, the ebony groves and flooded lagoons. This camp has a classic feel and recalls the bygone days.
Our journey takes us back down the Luangwa River for 2 nights at Luangwa River Camp, which is in the central part of South Luangwa near the famous Luangwa Wafwa — an area which is usually very good for lion, leopard and wonderful views. The lodge has 24 hour power and a large dining area that is excellent for workshopping.
Anyone wanting to extend their stay by a few days at the start or finish will find plenty to do in the Luangwa Valley. Alternatively spend 3 nights at Victoria Falls. Should you wish to explore Malawi, which is a short hop from Mfuwe, we can also recommend a visit to Nyika Plateau at this time. We can help you with arrangements.
Rates are from $4803 per person sharing with single supplement of $115.
Includes: flights from Lusaka and all guiding, national park fees, meals. laundry and accommodation. The trip is limited to 5 persons.
