August is a stunning time to be in Luangwa Valley — it’s the peak of the very best season when the lagoons are starting to dry up and bird and animal activity is really hotting up. Temperatures are still usually very comfortable at this time of year. The Bushcamps Company offers excellent guiding and superb facilities for photographers and have offered a trip especially priced for SA residents. International travellers are welcome too however, rates, with international park fees, will need to be adjusted..
South Luangwa
With its escarpment forming the southern part of the Great Rift Valley, the Luangwa River is one of the most intact river systems in Africa flowing more than 1000 kilometres from the highlands of Malawi to the Zambezi. It is the life-blood of a 9050 square kilometre park with wild meanders and ox bow lakes that create magical landscapes for photographers and amazing wildlife viewing. There are 60 different animal species including lion, leopard, elephant, giraffe, wild dog, big herds of buffalo and herds of puku and impala as well as over 400 bird species including 39 birds of prey and 47 summer migrants. With large forests of mature ebony, mopane, leadwood, winter thorn and marula, as well as ancient boabab trees, this park has incredible diversity.
Day 1: Depart from Lusaka and fly to Mfuwe.
Day 1 to 3. Kukaya Camp is inside the national park in the most intense game area of the park. The camp is secreted away in a forest overlooking a lagoon with a set of six villas all of which have their own private pools. As we are inside the national park we will be the first to enjoy the action in the park before the gates open to other vehicles. During our stay we will have access to the excellent photographic lecture room at Mfuwe Lodge for educational slide shows and discussions and there is a an excellent hide so you can keep shooting all day long.
Day 3 to 6. Chamilandu is a stunning bush camp to the south with just three stilted rooms. It offers a wonderful balance of comfort without losing the real essence of the bush experience. We can look out over the Luangwa River to the Chendeni Hills from the balcony of the lodge and explore the wilds of one of the great game reserves in Africa.
Day 7. We will drive back to Mfuwe for our flight to Lusaka.
